Complexity of the Problem

Figures #4 and #5 clearly illustrate the complexities of the issue. Both figures resulted from a study of 57,000 employees from four (4) employers.

Figure #4 shows that, while obesity is on employers' radar nationally, when the total cost is taken into consideration (medical, drug, absenteeism and presenteeism), this particular lifestyle is not in the top five most costly conditions - it is 9th.

Figure #5 looks at the same data differently - the top five conditions are listed under specific areas of expense. For example, OTHER CANCER, HEART DISEASE and HIGH CHOLESTEROL make it to the top five when costs are isolated to just Medical & Pharmacy. They are notably absent when looking at TOTAL COST.
